Late George 1st period Padouck-wood Bureau Bookcase

Uploaded by Charlecote

Product Type: Antique

Description

An exceptional quality Padouck-wood (imported from Andaman Island and Burma, which is hard and heavy wood used in the first quarter of the 18th century in Dutch or Portuguese furniture) bureau bookcase. The upper section is composed of an ogee-shaped cornice which is unusual, emphasized as it is with complex overhanging moldings typical of this period and balanced with raised and flat-topped sections to the sides. The space formed between this cornice and the arched doors is filled in with an original mirror, just as the double shaped mirror doors, and encloses adjustable shelves and three oak-lined drawers cross banded in walnut. Beneath the doors are slides for candles to reflect their lights in the mirrors. The fall and graduated drawers are cockbeaded and the fronts are strung in boxwood and holly, which makes an interesting contrast. The fall rests on two single drawers to reveal tiers of drawers and pigeonholes flanking a decoratively inlaid cupboard door between fluted pilasters. The lower section has three additional oak-lined drawers of the Bombay shape, canted corners and molded shaped plinth. The bureau stands on a pair of lion claw and ball feet with waterfall carving. The back feet are of an ogee form. The cabinet comes apart in three sections to make it easier to move.
