The field of this arrestingly beautiful antique Khotan has three circular medallions in ivory set dramatically against a cool charcoal ground filled additionally by an array of small openwork medallions and stylized shrubs. Meticulously drawn meander cornerpieces round out the field. Ivory-ground inner borders of fretwork and vinescroll provide an contrasting frame, underscored by a burgundy-ground cloud border of classic Khotan type. A remarkable balance of reserved complexity. East Turkestan, late nineteenth century.
